Oily Hair

Oily hair can pose a certain problem and frustration for people with this type of hair as it is difficult to maintain it's clean aspect and style. Find out how you need to deal with oily hair so your hair can look fabulous every time.

There are several hair types which help characterize human hair and oily hair type is one of them. People have evolved differently thus different things characterize different people and civilizations. The hair type is determined genetically and cannot be changed throughout the lifetime. Every hair type has it's advantages and disadvantages so the perfect hair type doesn't exist.

Oily hair characteristics
Oily hair has a greasy aspect especially one or two days after washing. The hair receives it's greasy look due to sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands. The sebum acts as a protective barrier against damaging external factors and helps moisturize the hair. The problem with greasy hair is that it needs regular cleaning and proper care in order to maintain it's clean look for longer. The overactive sebaceous glands which determine this type of hair cannot be controlled but with a little bit of knowledge and care the sebum released can be lowered.

How to care for oily hair
Caring for this type of hair is necessary as improper care can stimulate even more the sebaceous glands, causing more sebum to be released. This is exactly what people with greasy hair want to avoid, so here are some tips to help your tresses look their best for longer:

  • use hair products destined for oily hair as they contain ingredients which will help remove the oil from the hair while not stimulating the sebum to produce even more sebum

  • do not use products which contain harsh ingredients as they will strip all the oils from the hair leaving the hair feeling dry and triggering an alarm to release sebum

  • don't brush the hair too often as this will only help stimulate sebum and distribute it evenly throughout the hair

  • use a nourishing shampoo as this usually helps maintain the hair in good condition without causing over-stimulation of the sebaceous glands

  • don't exaggerate with hair conditioner. Usually only the ends of the hair have a dryer aspect and feel so limit yourself to applying the hair conditioner only on the ends of the hair

  • applying too many hair products can also emphasize the hairs greasiness

  • limit the times you put your hands through your hair as this will contribute to your hair becoming oily more rapid

  • give a final rinse using a mixture of cold water and vinegar as this will help soften the hair and give it a healthier, shiny appearance without causing the hair to become greasy

  • avoid over cleaning your hair as you will only cause your scalp to produce even more sebum, making the situation worse

  • avoid using styling tools which will cause damage to your hair by drying it of it's moisture as this will signal the sebaceous glands to create more sebum to protect the hair

  • pay attention to your diet as what you eat might have an influence over your hairs greasy appearance

  • avoid maintaining your hair unclean and greasy for long periods of time as this might trigger hair loss. Wash your hair every 3 or 4 days, depensing on how your hair looks

  • find hairstyles that will help your hair look lovely until you need to wash it, so your hair won't have an unpleasant appearance
